Overview – File Backups

Using Macrium Reflect File and Folder backups enables you to save selected files and folders in a single compressed archive file. This file can be used to restore your files and can also be directly mounted in Windows Explorer so individual files can be viewed or recovered using copy and paste.  Use file backups for all your personal data.

Full Backup

A full backup copies all the specified files and creates a new full backup file.  A full backup creates a new Backup Set complete with a unique Image ID.

Differential Backup

A differential backup only copies files that have changed since the full backup.  This reduces the resultant file size and time to create considerably.  A differential backup requires two files to be present for a restore, the full backup and the differential.

Incremental Backup

An Incremental back only saves the files changed since the last backup, whether this is a full, differential or incremental.  This will produce a smaller backup file than a differential and will be quicker to create, however, all previous backups up to and including the current incremental are required to restore or mount the backup.

Backup Set

An backup set is a term used to define a collection backup files that all relate to the same full backup. All files in the same backup set use the same Backup ID. A Backup ID is a unique 16 character code that is used in the file name and also internally in the backup files.
