Using a VHD with Oracle VirtualBox

Oracle provides two versions of VirtualBox, an open source edition with missing RDP and USB support, and a commercial version that is free for evaluation or personal use that includes those features.

The configuration instructions presented here are for Oracle VirtualBox version 3.14.

To use a VHD with Oracle VirtualBox

  1. From the VirtualBox main window, click New.

    The new virtual machine wizard appears.

  2. Select the operating system (OS) to match the VHD.

  3. Specify the base memory.

    Choose a value that matches the required memory for your virtualized OS while considering the memory available on your host machine.

    The Virtual Hard Disk page appears.

  4. To specify the VHD, click the yellow folder icon to launch the Virtual Media Manger.

  5. Click Next and then Finish having reviewed the summary

  6. In the VirtualBox main window, click Start.

    The virtual machine appears in a window on your host.

If the virtual machine cannot boot, then using VirtualBox you can adjust hardware environment options.

To adjust hardware environment settings

  1. In the VirtualBox main window, select the virtual machine and click Settings.

  2. Select System.
