GUID Partition Table (GPT) is a standard for the layout of the partition table on a physical hard disk. It is designed to overcome the size restrictions of the older Master Boot Record (MBR) disk standard and is necessary for larger disks.
The GPT disk format enables disks larger than 2TB to be utilized and supports up to 128 individual partitions.
